The Museum - where the keys to historical sites around town can be found, along with a 90-ton steam locomotive that pulled trains between Mafikeng and Bulawayo until 1971.Cultural Village - Credo Mutwa`s Cultural Village at Lotlamoreng, a living museum showing traditional African villages and cultures, with artwork and sculptures prepared here for the tourist market.

Game Reserves and outdoor activities in the area include:

  • Mafikeng Game Reserve, home of the White Rhino and the buffalo, as well as gemsbok and giraffe
  • Botsalana Game Reserve, on the Botswana border +-36km from Mafikeng
  • Lotlamoreng Game Reserve, a demarcated waterfowl sanctuary

Directions
Protea Hotel Mafikeng is about 300km west of Johannesburg - a comfortable three-hour drive. There are three main ways to reach the town, all of them through vast rolling farmlands and scenic small towns:
  • From Johannesburg via Ventersdorp and Lichtenburg
  • From Johannesburg via Magaliesburg and Lichtenburg
  • From Rustenburg via Zeerust.

Directions To Protea Hotel Mafikeng

From Johannesburg via Rustenburg (Tollgate route):

  • Take the N4 from Pretoria towards Rustenburg
  • Continue straight along the N4 and pass Rustenburg, Swartruggens and Groot Marico until you reach Zeerust
  • On entering Zeerust, continue on the Main Street. On exiting Zeerust, the Main Street becomes the R49 and later becomes the R47. Continue straight to Mafikeng
  • The R47 becomes Shippard Street on entering Mafikeng
  • At first set of traffic lights, turn right into Nelson Mandela Drive
  • Continue straight along Nelson Mandela Drive - the Protea Hotel Mafikeng will be on the right hand side, at the 5th traffic light

Directions from Johannesburg via Ventersdorp:

  • Take the N14 to Krugersdorp
  • On the N14, at the traffic lights just after Muldersdrift, turn right
  • Continue on this road until you reach the t-junction, where you turn right
  • Turn left just after the garage
  • Continue along this road through Ventersdorp until you reach Coligny. At Coligny, take the R503 to Lichtenburg
  • Follow the R503 through Lichtenburg until you reach Mafikeng
  • On entering Mafikeng, the R503 becomes Nelson Mandela Drive
  • Continue straight along Nelson Mandela Drive - the Protea Hotel Mafikeng will be on the right hand side, at the 6th traffic light
