Look up at the imposing Drakensberg Mountains of Champagne and Cathkin, with nearby access to the Peaks of Cathedral peak, the majestic Amphitheater at Royal Natal National Park and Giants Castle. All these areas are waiting for you to explore and each area differs totally.

Once home in the afternoons enjoy the rock pool and the beauty of South African sunsets, from your own verandah. Being just 4 km off the road that leads into the mountains we have the best of both worlds, total peace and quiet and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, but you are near the local restaurants and hotels for meals etc.

Beware of cutting your time here, as there is so much to do and see, it is not unknown for a guest to arrive for 3 days and stay for 12!

Delicious and plentiful breakfasts are served when possible on the lawn in the shade of an Acacia Tree, any type of breakfasts are offered and if you find the views so relaxing request another cup of coffee and take your time! Chat to your hostess about the local activities, restaurants and even for recommendations for your next stop.

If country life is for you, then you have found your venue!

Facilities
Experience true country life in South Africa where we all live in harmony. Dogs, cat sheep, cows and even guinea fowl stroll around at leisure. Our Boerbul, Pinotage, will protect you and Tassenberg, the Great Dane, will love and play with your children.

Other guests include Bald Ibis, Sacred Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Ha Ha Dedas, Raptors abound and owls tap-dance on your roof at night. Our newly established birders route provides birders with Montaine, Grassland, Riverene and Wetland birding habitats. Even Lbj`s are found in numbers.

Mountain hikes include guided hikes of the "Big Five" mountain trails including Sterk Horn, Amphlett, Champagne Castle, Gatberg and Injasuthi and Matterhorn. You can be rewarded by experiencing "San" Rock paintings in caves on route. Many of these are day trips from the Central Drakensberg. Acorn cottages are often used as "base camps" for those in training for Kilamanjero, Mount Kenya and who knows - Nepal? Mountain biking and many other adventure sports are within easy reach.

As the only "graded" self-catering accommodation in the Central Drakensberg we are proud to show our airy, light, sunny, cottages with a roaring fireplace and electric blankets in winter and fans in summer. Your comfort is guaranteed at affordable rates.

Make the high light of your visit at Acorn Cottages (by special request and conditions permitting) a Champagne Breakfast or Champagne Sundowner overlooking the magnificent Cathkin and Champagne Mountain peaks and valleys!

3 Day mid-week specials are available according to your choice of activities! Your hosts will happily help you plan your daily activities over a glass of South African wine, or a cup of tea.
